artist statement

Art is simply a way of life.  Various completed works are an abstract framework or point of reference alluding to actual experiences stemming from realities, dreams and impressions.

Painting and drawing in particular are a kind of mystical endeavor that envelops the spirit leading into fantastic unpredicted dimensions.

This life of art is a never ending quest beyond the horizon for an ever receding perfection that is always evolving before dissolving into one point perspective.

The works created are fleeting but hopefully filled for a moment with a glimmer of what lies within and a premonition of what lies beyond.

I grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida as a creative child and adolescent and was most fortunate to be surrounded by artists and creative individuals during these formative years. In 1967 I attended the Art Students League in Woodstock, New York, and then went on to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts beginning in 1968.  While a Philadelphia artist and resident for the next 13 years I worked in various galleries, did archival framing and managed the Graphics Department at Drexel University.  My first one person show was held at the legendary Painted Bride Gallery on South Street in 1975.  As an active member of the “Old City Arts” renaissance from 1975 to 1980 I collaborated with a variety of artists working in various disciplines including performance art.  As Filmmaker in Residence at the memorable ETAGE Experimental Theater and Gallery my main focus was producing and showing original Super 8 films made by myself and others.

In 1980 I moved to Orlando, Florida.  Although my main focus has always been on painting and drawing, many years were spent as a fine arts and commercial photographer. I taught at the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Florida and conducted a watercolor class at the Maitland Art Center in Maitland, Florida from 1984 until 1990.  In 1991 I moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas and was a special feature writer/photographer for the local newspaper while painting, drawing and making VHS videos.

In 2000 I returned to Florida and opened a fine art gallery for a short time before becoming Curator of Art and Exhibitions at the Museum of Art – DeLand, Florida to the present. In addition to this arts administration position I maintain an active painting studio.
